| 14th Annual GSRMC Spring Drag Races Klim Klips the Kompetiton Again/Good Weather Prevails ! Saturday, April 24, 2010: Chuck Klim won the Spring 2010 GSRMC Drag Day Eliminator, taking the title for the second consecutive time. Chuck managed to come out on top of a field of nine challengers on a day of beautiful weather. We knew it had to happen sometime, although some have had doubts. We finally had clear weather for a club drag race event. For the first time in almost two years, and after three rainouts and unsettled weather for the last event, the forecast and the skies were beautiful and unambiguous. This didn’t help the turn-out very much, but it did make it very pleasant to be out at the track for the day. And we needed it, too, because track clean-up delays were the order of the day. Ten participants showed up in the Mustang Club lane that day. We had GSRMC officers Mike Bruno and John Rerecich return driving their black Mustangs, a 2007 Shelby and a 2003 GT, respectively. Also returning was Russ Allen III of the Horse Gang club in his 1991 Mustang LX 5.0L. Englishtown veterans Mike Spina and Jennifer Murphy returned as well, this time driving Mike’s two cars, a 2002 Mustang GT convertible, and to add a bit of spice to the mix, a 1988 Lincoln LSC Mk VII. Defending champion Chuck Klim, representing both the GSR and Orange County Mustang Clubs, brought his 2003 Mustang Cobra back to the event, while Carlos Sobrino returned with a “new” car, an ex-Florida State Highway Patrol 1986 Mustang coupe. Two newcomers to our event were Bob Baeli driving a 2006 Mustang GT and Donny King in a 1990 LX 5.0. Lastly was yours truly in the slow-but-steady 1979 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Due to the track clean-ups (Chevy breakage, again), it took half of the day to get two time shots each under our belts before we staged for the eliminator. We lost a participant as we rolled out to the track so nine of us ran in the first round. Mike Bruno and John were the first match-up, and their cars were very equally matched, as they both ran mid-13-second passes. John broke out of his dial-in time by a mere 0.002 second, giving the win to Mike. Jennifer cut a very good 0.176-second light in her race with Bob, and the Level 10-shifted Lincoln ran only a tenth off her dial, but Bob’s red-light foul had already decided the issue. Chuck and I lined up together as the next pair, but the red-eye winked at me, so Chuck’s fine 0.115-second reaction time wasn’t needed for him to advance to the second round. Russ and Carlos lined up next, and although Carl’s former trooper-car blasted off the best elapsed time of the day with an outstanding 11.349 seconds, Russ used a phenomenal 0.015-second R.T., another best-of-the-day, to move on to the next round. Mike Spina was the “lucky dog” and took the bye-run to close out the first round. Mike B. and John had to leave due to B.O.O.B. show commitments, which left holes in the NHRA-ladder that the Englishtown officials had set up. When that happens, apparently the pairs (or singles) are run in the same order as the ladder. This meant that although there were an even two pairs left in completion, only one pair would run together in the second round while two drivers got bye-runs. This left Jennifer and Mike S. as the competition pair. This time Jennifer cut an even better 0.120-secind light at the start, and spurred the hot-rod Lincoln through the quarter-mile just ahead of Mike’s Mustang. At least Mike can take pride in the fact that one of his cars still advanced to the next round. Chuck and Russ got the byes to complete the second round. This situation set up the third and semi-final round again with a competition pair and a single run. Jennifer and Russ contested the round and this time Russ got the better start with a 0.122-second R.T., sending him on to the final, while “Lucky” Chuck took another free pass. In the final round, Chuck and Russ lined up to do battle for the eliminator title. Russ’ LX had been running 12.9s and low 13s all day, so he logically dialed in at 12.90. As the evening cooled off however, the car saved its best performance for the last run of the event. When the lights blinked down, Russ cut another great light at 0.133-second, besting Chuck’s also-good 0.170 R.T., but Russ’ Mustang broke out of its dial by 0.022 second. Lady Luck continued to smile on Chuck as Russ handed him the win on a 12.496-second pass. This earned Chuck the Spring 2010 Eliminator title and the second-in-a-row at a GSRMC Drag Day event. Congratulations go to Chuck, and also to Russ for his runner-up performance in the final round. Thanks to all who participated and to Raceway Park for their continued support of our drag racing fun. Hopefully this change in our weather luck will become a trend. See you next time at the track! Geoff Post |
